Seven years of sex abuse: How Mormon officials let it happen

The Associated Press has obtained nearly 12,000 pages of sealed records from a child sex abuse lawsuit against the Mormon church. The documents offer the most detailed and comprehensive look yet at the church's so-called “help line” for dealing with child sex abuse accusations against officials and members. Families of survivors who filed the lawsuit said they show it’s part of a system that can easily be misused by church leaders to divert abuse accusations away from law enforcement and instead to church attorneys who may bury the problem, leaving victims in harm’s way. One victim was 5 when her father told his bishop that he was sexually abusing her. The abuse went on for seven more years, while the bishop failed to report it to authorities.

Interactive: The Other Disappeared

This comprehensive, interactive multimedia series in Spanish and English tells the stories of those in and around Iguala, Mexico, who had lost family members to kidnappings and killings, living in a purgatory of silence for years, and their quest for answers and justice. Judges described “The Other Disappeared” as a “tour de force,” reported with “incredible depth, rigor and compassion." Originally published by The Associated Press between September - December, 2015. This project is a collaboration between Christopher Sherman, Eduardo Castillo and Dario Lopez-Mills.

Lobster divers risk injury, death in Honduras

PUERTO LEMPIRA, Honduras (AP) — Thousands of men across the Mosquitia region of Honduras and Nicaragua depend on lobster fishing to eke out a living. Hundreds have been stricken with the bends — decompression sickness caused when nitrogen bubbles form in divers’ bodies. Some are paralyzed. Some are killed.

With more than 60 percent of its 9 million people living in poverty, Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, and the Mosquitia is one of the most impoverished areas.

Honduras mother waits for migrant son missing en route to US

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (AP) — Haydee Posadas had waited eight years for her son to come home. On the last night of her long vigil, she was too agitated to sleep.

Her son had fled Honduras for the U.S. in 2010 in part because of gang threats, just as thousands are doing today in the migrant caravans headed north, including men from the same neighborhood. But en route in Mexico, again like so many others, Wilmer Gerardo Nunez disappeared into the vortex of drug violence that he was trying to escape in the first place. Left in limbo, his anguished mother prayed for an answer.

Venezuela River Scavengers

CARACAS (AP) — Desperate to earn a living in a crumbling economy, a surge of men has turned to the bottom of the Guaire, a polluted river that runs the distance of Venezuela’s capital city. A good day of scouring the rocks and gravel by hand can turn up an ear ring backing, lost ring or any bit of precious metal they can cash in to buy food. Scavengers say they’re mindful of deadly flash floods but ignore long-term health impacts of wading every day into the churning toxic water. Promotional video edited by Dario Lopez-Mills.

Argentina Zoo

BUENOS AIRES (AP) — A giraffe and a rhinoceros recently died at the former Buenos Aires zoo and conservationists say that's the latest sign of a poorly planned attempt by the city to turn the 140-year-old zoo into a park and relocate most of its 1,500 animals. A former zoo director has filed a lawsuit demanding an investigation, arguing that a lack of resources and the stress from construction works at the site contributed to the deaths.
